Car accident victim have only 14 days from the date of a car accident to start medical treatment in order to activate up to $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) benefits. Without any treatment (e.g. an urgent care visit, a visit to your primary care physician, a visit with a chiropractor) this important source of payment of medical bills is forfeited forever.
PIP benefits are the primary payment source when you are injured in a car accident, before even health insurance. This is why when you present to a hospital or urgent care reporting that you were in a car accident, the facility will ask for your car insurance and your health insurance.
Once PIP is exhausted, a client’s health insurance is the secondary payment source. However, when you are injured in an accident, your health insurer (private, Medicare or Medicaid) is entitled to reimbursement through of subrogation.
